MysTech Conference 2023

Resonance as a bridge between the spiritual and the physical

“The nature of the etheric and the sentient bodies is based on… spiritual tone and spiritual vibrations. The etheric body is lower than the astral body, but the activity exercised in the etheric body stands higher than the activity of the astral body.”

What is the MysTech Conference about?

MysTech is dedicated to driving positive change for our future by raising the awareness of the role that technology has in our society and in human evolution in the light of spiritual science. The past century has witnessed astonishing advances in technology that have impacted our day-to-day lives, health, and consciousness in profound and unexpected ways. When we consider the impact of technology in the context of our evolution as both physical and spiritual beings, how might it contribute to our future? Will continued advances in technology be a benefit or a burden for the potential of humankind? How must we respond to modern technological developments in order to shape the future towards the good?

In this conference you will gain new insights about the mysteries of technology from the perspectives of spiritual science through the original research of our distinguished speakers across a broad range of disciplines. You will also gain a new appreciation for social three-folding, biodynamics,  eurythmy, and more, and learn how these methods and thought-forms can help us to meet the coming challenges of the modern age.

Kate Meyer

“Being both an alumna and the parent of an alumna myself, I have a unique perspective on High Mowing, the education it offers students, and the opportunity for community and connection it provides to our families. I am forever grateful to those who have gone before me and am dedicated to helping HMS meet and exceed all expectations.”

Kate’s relationship with High Mowing began as a student, attending high school here from 1986-1990. She went on to graduate magna cum laude from Franklin Pierce University with a BS in Financial Management, and began her professional career in community banking where she held positions in Audit, Compliance, Security, and General Operations, culminating with a position as a founding executive of Hampshire First Bank, a de novo community bank serving Southern New Hampshire, from 2006 to 2012.

Kate also spent time in the corporate environment as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, before joining High Mowing in 2016 as the Director of Finance and Operations. She took on the role of Head of School in 2021. In addition to her time as an employee of High Mowing, Kate served as a trustee for both High Mowing School and Pine Hill Waldorf School before the 2017 merger of the two schools.

As a former, self-proclaimed “Army brat,” Kate learned several languages in her early years – German, Dutch, English, and French – all at the same time. She loves to be outside and enjoys backcountry skiing and skinning up Crotched Mountain. She likes to mountain bike and paddle board and has participated in numerous triathlons – from sprint to Olympic lengths – and half marathons.

Breakthrough!

In-Person

Breakthrough! (Crafting new narratives)

“Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” ― Victor Hugo

But even ideas whose times have come need midwives and champions who resonate to them first, even before they have fully descended into this world.

George Washington is said to have been killed by physicians treating him for a severe cold. Preeminent in the medical arts toolbox was bloodletting (at times extracting up to 80% of a patient’s blood volume), which they performed four times on the great general and first President. Medical history is replete with instances of treatments worse than the illnesses they are thought to cure. The great success and penetration of homeopathy in the United States prior to the 20th century is often attributed by allopaths to the brutality and misguidedness of what was then conventional medicine’s flailing and failing responses to waves of epidemics that swept through the populace. Cholera’s death toll in the Cincinnati, Ohio 1849 epidemic was 48-60% for conventional care and 3% for homeopathy—attributed by allopaths, of course, to the “fact” that homeopathy’s rarefied dilutions had neither helpful nor harmful effects.

So the question arises, “What common contemporary medical practices or scientific beliefs will be seen, a mere century or two from now, as archaic, laughable, head-scratch-evoking or tragic? Rudolf Steiner’s insight was that all experiences have as necessary components both a percept and a concept—or put another way, a phenomenon that you have no concept for, you cannot fully, truthfully experience. So, what key missing concepts are keeping many individuals, who are otherwise inclined toward a more spiritually inclusive science and medicine, from receiving the riches pouring towards humanity from spiritual sources? Are those chasms, those church/yoga/meditation on Sunday, and then Wall Street or the laboratory on Monday chasms plus the mind/body divide chasm–killing us? If so, they have to be bridged. But how?

With this in mind I have presented two questions to our Mystech presenters: 1) What contemporary ideas or practices will near future generations (the next century or two) find laughable and/or contemptible? And 2) what essential concepts (anthroposophical or otherwise) made more widely available and approachable, may have the power to utterly transform the present toward the good?

A deep feeling for essential breakthrough entry points, especially for the ones we are personally called to, can best direct our efforts and collaborations. We will explore all of this.

Walter Alexander, a former fiction writer, high school English teacher (public and Waldorf), and current medical journalist, is also a longtime anthroposophist active at Anthroposophy NYC (the New York branch). He is the author of Hearts and Minds (Reclaiming the soul of science and medicine), Lindisfarne Books (2019), and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals showing that the heart is not a propulsion pump (i.e., on Branko Furst’s research) and on investigations into the remarkable power of placebos, including study of a drug that reduces pain more than placebos, but only if patients are consciously aware that they’ve received it.

The Resonance of Moral Qualities

A Path to Resonance and Moral Technology

Artistic feeling is the term Rudolf Steiner used for the capacity to perceive the non-physical qualities inherent to color, form and all sense phenomena. Artistic feeling can be exercised and developed through the arts but is by no means limited to the arts and artists. Artistic feeling is a capacity, like logical and mathematical thinking, that can be developed in all human beings as part of their essential humanity, but equally, as a practical capacity for meeting the evolving needs and challenges of human life.

Recent brain research as documented by individuals like Ian McGilchrist, demonstrate that our technological civilization is founded on a one-sided development of the left hemisphere of our brain. Only a concerted and sustained effort to cultivate the right hemisphere, and on that basis, a harmonious interaction between both hemispheres, will we be able to realize our full human potential. In this regard, artistic faculties and capacities have a vital role to play in counterbalancing the one-sided left-hemisphere nature of binary thinking and the technology founded on it.

Furthermore, artistic feeling allows us to experience the resonant and moral qualities of the sense world that prepare us for the eventual development of resonance and moral technologies, that is, to perceive and creatively work with etheric forces as we presently work with physical forces.

We will explore these perspectives with the aid of practical examples.

Michael Howard was born in Vancouver, Canada, in 1946, and began sculpting at the age of fifteen. He studied sculpture at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and received a BFA from Eastern Michigan University, and a MA in Fine Arts from Columbia Pacific University in CA.

Michael met the work of Rudolf Steiner in 1969 when he attended Emerson College in England. Since that time he has researched the relationship between qualities of movement, sound and form. Exploring the nature of metamorphosis has also been a central part of his creative activity.

How did others respond to you… to each other? Do you feel that you/others have been heard? Was this a satisfying “conversation”?

Phoebe Alexander received her diploma in anthroposophic art therapy from “De Wervel,” Academie vor Kunstzinnig Therapie, The Netherlands; training in Waldorf pedagogy/remedial pedagogy from Emerson College in England; certificates in gardening and horticulture from the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY; and her MSEd in therapeutic recreation education from Lehman College, CUNY. She maintained a weekly therapeutic painting group at the Fellowship Community for about 15 years, and has offered courses and workshops on this and other areas of anthroposophical art therapy at the New York Branch of the Anthroposophical Society, at conferences, and other venues.

We will approach our work artistically through feeling with the power of imagination, and engage in the following activities :

  • To open our hearts as the center of Eurythmy movement.
  • To loosen the hardening from the long hours of work at the computer through stimulating and refreshing rhythmical movement.
  • To activate the imagination for the vowel gestures as the light filled movement from within.

Mari Yamaguchi graduating from the Camphill Eurythmy School in Danby Whitby, England in 2004, and has dedicated nearly twenty years to offering Eurythmy in the New England area. While teaching Eurythmy to elementary-aged Waldorf students, Mari expanded her training to receive a diploma from the Therapeutic Eurythmy Training of North America in Copake, New York. Her experience with therapeutic Eurythmy led her to work with children, adults and people with special needs in schools, Camphill settings as well as private practice. Quantum Entanglement and Wave Particle Duality

“A Scientific Basis for Understanding the Relationship between the Higher and Lower Mind”

The universal principles described in Quantum Physics as ‘entanglement’ and ‘wave-particle duality’, are correlated with fundamental principles illustrated in several branches of Spiritual Sciences, and not only provide us with the intuitive understanding necessary for learning how cosmic intelligences work in manifesting their own outer body through a dynamic process self-organization and emergence, but also for understanding how our own mind and body function as a single unit. These two principles provide us with a dynamic model for understanding how we exist in both physical and spiritual form on multiple dimensions at the same time, and how it is that we create our outer world as a direct reflection of our inner world on a larger and more inclusive scale, as the means for ‘experiencing ourselves’ through our own mental projection. When properly understood, these principles provide us with practical instruction for learning how to operate our own mind in not only creating our reality, but also for transforming ourselves to a higher level of consciousness by working to systematically evolve our own mental creation. The fundamental relationships described in both of these principles can also help us in recognizing how our individual consciousness is currently merging with AI technology to create what appears to be ‘intelligent machines’ that imitate human characteristics and the behaviors that result from them. It’s not just our “information” that’s being harvested through our use of various media devices, it’s our consciousness as an energetic state and model of conduct.

Linda Gadbois earned a Bachelor of science degree in clinical hypnotherapy, and a doctorate in Spiritual Sciences, with numerous specialty certifications in various healing modalities. She’s a professional Educator, Transpersonal Psychologist, Initiate of Hermetic Sciences, author, spiritual mentor, and professional artist. She is a gifted teacher and highly skilled in her ability to communicate spiritual ideas in a way that can be intuitively understood and therefore applied at the practical level in producing immediate and long-lasting results. She teaches by recognizing and tuning into the deep codes, patterns and organic designs that permeate all levels of the cosmos simultaneously in a kind of joyous, eloquent dance. Her life’s work as a visionary has been to provide a creative model for those who have a desire to transform themselves into their highest state of ultimate perfection and expression. She believes that the creative process as a dynamic process of transformation can be taught and learned by anyone who has a strong desire to become the best they can be and is willing to do what it takes to achieve it.

Anthropophonetics and Cymatics

Anthropophonetics and Cymatics

Anthropophonetics is a healing art that heals through tones, sounds and touch. It is not the sound that possesses healing power, but the living, mental and spiritual element of the tone and the sound of the word. It is well known that the Chladni sound figures cannot be described with today’s vibrational laws of physics. The effectiveness of the tones and sounds does not come from the external material world, but from the world of the harmony of the spheres, which can be brought to fruition through a special kind of singing and making sounds. The order of these forces is given by the zodiac and the planets. The power of the word is addressed in the prologue of the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word.” Anthropophonetics works from the same power of words.

Christoph Broens, 58, graduate physicist, anthroposophical physician, course leader anthropophonetics is the founder of Michael Heilzentrum in Hirschhorn/Germany and has a Medical Office in Baden/Swiss.

Expanding Our Cymatic Perception

Expanding Our Cymatic Perception

A Living Metaphor

Cymatics is a branch of physics that vividly portrays fundamental principles underlying the ways that matter takes shape in nature. Employing simple experimental techniques, the generative processes of vibration, oscillation, and resonance are made visible with awe-inspiring splendor. When examined closely, one observes that the same structures and processes appear all around us in living and “inanimate” objects, regardless of scale, complexity, and proximity, combining and interacting to create the diverse and manifold expressions of creation.

These processes occur within and around us, in subtle vibrations, such as thought, feeling, and volition, and reflected outwardly as physical manifestations. Viewed in this way, one may perceive oneself as a vibratory instrument in a massive orchestra with a virtually unlimited repertoire, thereby opening our sense of possibility to embrace our full creative potential.

Expanding our cymatic perception can provide a living, breathing matrix for the creative impulse to take form on earth, though our own perceptive capacity. This presentation will be an invitation to explore our creative imagination in a new light, giving voice to it in a way that we’ve never before imagined as possible.

Jeff Volk, for the past 40 years, has been popularizing the science of cymatics which demonstrates, through simple physics experiments, how “inert” matter can be “animated” into life-like flowing forms by the unseen forces of vibration. The implications of these experiments are vast and have inspired profound insights into the hidden realms of nature. These insights pertain not only to our world at large, but also in deeply personal ways to the subtle realms of human nature, which are often just as mysterious.

Jeff has worked as an award-winning producer. His 1992 documentary Of Sound Mind and Body: Music and Vibrational Healing won the Hartley Film Award through the Institute of Noetic Sciences. He then produced The International Sound Colloquium which became the premier conference exploring the power of sacred sound and healing music. Jeff’s company, MACROmedia Publishing, has focused on books and media to inspire and enlighten the spiritual seeker. In 2001, he re-published Hans Jenny’s two books on cymatics as a single composite edition. An extensively revised edition is once again underway, highlighting much of the work that has been carried out in this field over the 22 years since the previous edition was published.

Jeff’s penetrating poetry springs from pondering how the universal principles of cause and effect as demonstrated by cymatics, play out subjectively in our personal lives. His work seeks to offer a wider perspective and an inclusiveness that integrates the disparate … in ways that only poetry can. The Ambiguity of Autumn: Poems of Love, Longing and Transcendence (2010), is his first book of poetry.

Will Robots Ever be able to Think and Feel?

Rudolf Steiner on intelligence and the brain. Characteristics of thinking. The possibility of determining one’s next thought and free will. The inexorable dependence of machines on physical laws and their determinism (also statistical determinism). Concepts are not in the brain. Characteristics of sensations and feeling, their subjectivity and individuality. The objectivity and universality of machines, especially computers.

Valdemar W. Setzer is a retired professor of computer science at the University of São Paulo (USP), the most important university in Brazil. He founded and directed the Computer Center (CCE) at USP, and also the Center for Teaching Computing at his Institute of Mathematics and Statistics. After his retirement, he worked for some years as a consultant for important state and private companies. He has been a member of the Anthroposophical Society since 1971 and of the School of Spiritual Science since 1980. Besides his scientific production on compiler construction, software engineering and computers in education, he has published 19 books about technical, educational and philosophical subjects, also in the US, Germany, UK and Finland. Presently he has been giving lectures about various subjects, including problems causes by electronic media and solutions for them, mental concentration and meditation, and elementary mathematics under the program Ambassadors of Mathematics, which he introduced in this Institute. Valdemar is a musician (flutist, was a concert soloist in his youth) and ceramist. His greatest joy is relating to his 8 grandchildren.

Human Resonance

Measuring Connectivity between Aspects of the Human Organism

How do human feeling, energy and physicality, for example, work together in the evolving human being?  How do current events illuminate the struggles for our several aspects to come to fruition?

There is more to the human being than generally acknowledged in mainstream medicine, religion and social science.  The idea that we are for the most part a thinking, feeling biological machine has been gaining ground since the Enlightenment.  This conception falls short of what observation can tell us about how human beings interact, both in terms of productive cooperation and healing on outward and inward levels.  It also has far reaching consequences for the avenues science pursues in furthering human flourishing.

The human aspect or “field” of feeling and consciousness, sometimes called the “astral”, resonates with the living substance, sometimes called the “etheric”, in such a way that the formative, life body is informed and guided by the knowing, soul body.  This principle continues to apply in a teacher-student, or healer-patient relationship.  Whatever methods we are applying, it is ultimately the influence, or resonance, of higher members of our own being which instruct and heal lower members of another human being.  Our purpose will be to create a practical understanding of how this works, what the obstacles are in our world, what is behind those hindrances, and how the human spirit will overcome them.

John Rollinson has been a Eurythmy teacher with a focus on early childhood since 1993 as well as a therapist since 2001.  He cofounded a WECAN member Nursery School in Massachusetts in 2014.  One of three fully certified practitioners of Craniosacral therapy in Massachusetts, John practices full-time in Northampton, as well as at a school clinic in the area.  He studied at the Upledger Institute for Craniosacral therapy, where he trained through the highest levels with the Institute’s founder, Dr. John Upledger.  A graduate of High Mowing School, John earned a 5-year degree in Eurythmy in 1993 culminating 10 years intensive study of Anthroposophy in Germany, Sweden, England and Switzerland, before working as a performer in the London College of Eurythmy Ensemble.  John is a Waldorf teacher and has worked with children and adults for over 30 years.  Besides Eurythmy, the major focus of his work has been Craniosacral and Somato Emotional Release Therapy.  Working with patients aged 1 day through 101 years, a dramatic shift in approach has been tapping into the individual destiny of the inmost human being – throwing the therapeutic wheel towards the victory of freedom over determinism.  John has 6 children aged 10 – 30 and lives in western Massachusetts.

Physics to Medicine

What can Physics contribute to medicine? So far, the only major contributions have been the forces of gravity, electricity and magnetism, along with atomic and molecular structures which forms the basis for modern biochemistry and medicine. But can physics break through the stronghold of “Atoms” and provide a different foundation for medicine and technology? This talk will address these questions, and provide a pathway for further work.

Gopi Krishna Vijaya, PhD, is from Bangalore, India. He completed his undergraduate physics training from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (India), and his PhD in physics (Solar Energy) from the University of Houston in 2014. He is currently engaged in postdoctoral research of the Reciprocal System of Physics – a way to inculcate Goethean thought into modern physics – in Salt Lake City, Utah.

In the natural scientific domain, he has been the author of 13 journal publications in experimental and theoretical semiconductor physics, presented his work in multiple international conferences (IEEEPVSC, SPIE etc.), served as a research mentor for a number of students, worked with the Port of Galveston Solar Project and collaborated with MIT, Cal Tech, Imperial College London, University of New South Wales and the University of Tokyo among others in an International Consortium for Solar Energy.

Cognition (comprised of sensation, imagination, inspiration, and intuition) is one such topic of which the Speaker has (humbly) gained some insight; wherein it appears these facilities are lawfully present from birth onward, and present (in some form) in every act of cognition.  The burgeoning of these facilities has been little-understood, appreciated and – as is the case with thinking in general – often passes-by unnoticed.  A deeper understanding of this Law (“The Cognitive-Law”) provides insight into, and appreciation for the process of the perception of meaning, in all of its forms.  Viewed against the background of Anthroposophy, super-sensible cognition (“The Three I’s”) is easily-recognized as belonging to this sequence.

A solid foundation is required for this work.  In conjunction with the knowledge, experience and perspectives of others, it is hoped this Goethean Theory of Knowledge may help to shed some light upon practical matters, such as the use of refined-breathing for the achievement of resonance (as will be discussed).

Jim Steil is an Electrical Engineer and former Waldorf Science Teacher, currently engaged in the commercialization of ongoing Lithium-Titanate battery research.

The topic of this Seminar is based upon a Masters Thesis completed at Sunbridge College through the Barfield School, Contemplative-Enquiry Program.  Making-use of recent findings in the Cognitive Sciences, it is an exposition on Goethe’s Method used to narrate a study of cognition and cognitive-development in infants, children and adults (re-written for publication, the Preface is available upon request).

Aspects of Listening

Based on Goethe`s essay “The experiment as mediator between subject and object.”

According to Goethe, the phenomena we experience depend extensively on the attitude we adopt. Essential is the way in which we, as a subject, approach the objective world. In view of the invention of the Lautsänger and the new possibilities of the technical reproduction of music and speech connected with it, the question arises how we can move from hearing to listening. The ability to listen goes hand in hand with the experience of sound and tone.

Harald Hobelsberger is an engineer, head of the School of Cymatics and managing director of Lautsänger GmbH in Hirschhorn, Germany.

Do elemental beings of the elemental world really exist in vibrations and frequencies?

An investigation into how the elemental world communicates with our world through the three occultisms: hygienic, mechanical, and eugenic.

Are Thoresen, MVD, has trained in acupuncture, homeopathy, and anthroposophical medicine and operates a holistic private veterinary practice in Sandefjord, Norway. He has been active with MysTech since its first conference with his focus on Hygienic Occultism. He has published over 25 papers and 10 books and given lectures and workshops about his research at various venues including these MysTech conferences. Are’s current research has focused on Vidar and the Northern Way of Initiation. In his written works, Are has explored the human potential for spiritual knowledge and for new spiritual experiences in our time.

Fundamentals of Cymatics

Cymatics is much more than just the visualization of sounds. As a new scientific approach it can lead to a deep understanding of the living forces. In this lecture we will approach different cymatic phenomena in order to advance toward their basic principles. We will explore the different qualities of the etheric forces (warmth, light, chemical/sound and life) and how they are connected to the phenomenon of tone. The question of space and counter-space will be approached by first steps in projective geometry.

Dr. Ralf Tita holds an PhD in engineering and worked as an R&D consultant in industrial printing and medical device technology. Since 2009 he is with the “House of Singing”, (Hirschhorn Germany) which was founded by Atmani in 2000 as an artistic and scientific research and education center. He organized the First World Cymatics Congress in Germany in 2014 and is part of the faculty of the “School of Cymatics”. He is the publisher of the Mani Verlag and responsible for the product management and production in the Lautsänger GmbH.

Life, Resonance and Spirituality

Life, Resonance and Spirituality

Resonance plays a vital role in human beings and in all living systems – from the interactions between the molecules in our bodies to the imagination, inspiration and intuition that allows our soul to connect with the spiritual world. We can thank resonance for the harmonious interactions that hold our spiritual and physical bodies together and enable us to interact with the outside world. In my talk, I will provide some engaging examples – from both natural science and spiritual science – with a focus on the forces and interactions that can serve to form a bridge between the spiritual and physical.  Questions to be addressed will include: What is unique about living organisms and their interaction with the etheric life and formative forces? How does the life force permeate and animate our bodies? How might it be channeled towards a new etheric technology? And finally, what role does resonance play in our ability to interact with spiritual beings and the higher beings of the macrocosm?

Doug Smith is a molecular geneticist whose career has focused on genomic technologies, the human genome, molecular diagnostics, and personalized medicine. In parallel, Doug has pursued his long-term interest in Spiritual Science, Anthroposophy and Christology. Learning to navigate both inner spiritual and outer technological paths has been a lifelong endeavor, and Doug’s experience has been that the two are both compatible and complementary.
